Anniversary Dinner @ The Atelier

Last weekend we celebrated our 2-year anniversary with an excellent meal at The Atelier Restaurant. Matthew came across this little restaurant on Tripadvisor, where it is ranked the second best place to eat in Edinburgh. There were a whole lot of 5 star reviews, but we found it a little bit hard to believe that a place within that price range could be as good as all the reviews claimed. However, our expectations were exceeded, and all the great reviews were absolutely spot on!


It’s not the most visually striking restaurant from the outside, but who cares, it’s the grub that matters!

The menu was simple and I guess it could be described as European. The prices weren’t too bad at all, especially considering how good the quality of the food was.


I got bored when Matthew went to the loo.

As a starter we both opted for the seared king scallop, poached trout, parsley puree, celeriac remoulade and crispy parma ham. (I obviously had mine without the ham.) We both thought it was delicious; my favourite thing on the plate was the really succulent trout that was poached in an airtight bag in one of those water-filled machines that you see on Masterchef. 🙂

The Atelier Restaurant Red Mullet Main Dish

I continued on the fish theme for my main; I had red mullet fillet with pak choi, basil mash and light shellfish espuma. Again, there’s nothing I can fault, it was sooo nice, and all the flavours worked together really well.


As you can see I’m too busy enjoying my meal to pose for a photo. ( I even ate the crispy skin, which I’ve never done before.)

Matthew had braised shoulder of lamb, confit lamb belly cake, roast rack of lamb, sweet potato gratin, butternut squash veloute and mint jus – he was more than happy with his choice. Such a pretty plate that it almost makes me want to eat meat. Almost.

We were both quite full after two courses, so we decided to share a dessert. For once we both picked the same one: caramelised white chocolate mousse, roasted pineapple, mango and coconut ice cream.


1 minute later that beautiful piece of art was completely devoured…


Afterwards we had a couple of drinks and talked about the future at this cute bar nearby.


Excellent dinner in excellent company. If you live in Edinburgh or plan to visit, make sure you eat at the Atelier! It’s Michelin quality (ignoring the fact that I’ve never tasted Michelin quality) for a fraction of the price. Don’t forget to book!
