We’re back from Finland and after getting used to how -20 degrees feels on your face it felt pretty tropical when we stepped out of the plane here in Edinburgh! I was really glad we got to experience a really cold spell though as it was quite an exotic thing for Matthew and I’m constantly missing the four distinctive seasons we get in Finland.
This blog post has been sitting in my draft box ever since our last visit to Finland in September, so maybe it’s time to finally release it! On a glorious and warm Friday in September we took the 15-minute ferry over to Sveaborg Sea Fortress and enjoyed lunch, coffee and the beautiful island for a few hours. If you ever visit Helsinki you need to check out this place too!
As always, time went extremely fast and our Finland holiday has come to an end. There’s always a lot of mixed feelings involved as I obviously miss Matthew and having our little family intact but feel so at home here in Finland with my family here that I wouldn’t mind staying for longer. Both Lana and I are very comfortable here and she’s enjoying spending time with her mommo and mofa – although she insists on calling them both mommo (granny) 🙂
I wasn’t planning on writing a blog post about my recent visit to my home town’s newcomer on the restaurant scene, Meat District, (hence the lovely and dark mobile photos) but then changed my mind after having seen my main dish…You can see the restaurant on the left hand side in the photo above – a very nice location in the middle of picturesque Porvoo Old Town. The restaurant takes pride in serving ecological and locally sourced meat where possible but welcomes vegetarians too.
As the summer was pretty shit in Edinburgh I said to everyone that my last hope of some nice weather was on this holiday in Finland – and somebody clearly was paying attention as the sun has been shining pretty much every day and it’s been around 20 degrees until now! So thank you whoever is responsible!
We spent last weekend in Helsinki and damn it felt good to be back! I was reminded by how beautiful and cool this city is once again – and something I’ve never really thought too much about is just how gorgeous all the pastel coloured buildings are. Such a stark contrast to Edinburgh’s grey houses – both cities provide tons of amazing Instagram content though!
As it’s been six months since our last visit to Finland I felt like I really needed a good dose of family, friends, Finnish nature, Finnish food and all things Finnish! The countryside I used to get bored with as a teenager is now something I long for – and breathing in all those familiar smells of late summer/early autumn is so invigorating!
