January Blues

Happy New Year 2014!!!

Hope you’ve all had the chance to have a relaxing holiday and recharge your batteries for the new year. I’ve had a great (and extremely lazy) two weeks off work – which I had to pay for this morning when I dragged myself out of bed at 8 am only to spend the entire day in a zombiesque state. The fact that it’s Monday and it’s been raining the whole day didn’t make things better. Today is apparently the most depressing day of the year – totally agree!!

Anyway, on a more positive note, my Christmas day was really nice, we had a delicious dinner a la Matthew’s mum, followed by opening Christmas presents, playing Pictionary and just lazing in front of the fire. Just the way a Christmas should be!

The following day we had a plane to catch at 2 pm. It was a really sunny and nice day, so we were quite surprised when we found out our flight to London was delayed for 1,5 hours. Luckily we made our second flight without any problems.

I was sooo excited to meet my nephew Antonio, the cutest little thing in the world. I wish I could’ve taken both him and my niece Nicole with me back to Edinburgh! (If you ever need a babysitter, let me know!)

All in all, we had a really relaxed week in Finland, met up with all my friends on Saturday night – which ended in Matthew singing karaoke – again! What is it with Finland that brings out his inner artist? Also visited both my grannies and saw my brothers and their girlfriends. New Year’s Eve was very quiet for us as Matthew wasn’t feeling very well. We just had dinner with my parents and watched the Hobbit – not actually a bad way to celebrate at all!

The Adams family about to tuck in.

I had a lovely nut roast instead of the turkey, just looking at the photo makes me feel full again 🙂

Wish we had one of these in our flat too.

My dad was nice enough to cook us a second Finnish Christmas dinner so Matthew could try our specialities. Very nice dinner as well – thinking we should make celebrating xmas twice a yearly tradition…

The Äikäs family about to tuck in. (After taking the compulsory xmas dinner photos of course.)

Probably the best part of the entire holiday was to meet this little fella. Antonio is just two months old!

And of course this wee girl that is now 2 years and 2 months old. She is such a little character – wasn’t easy to get her to stay still so I could take that photo.

This photo is blurry but he just looks so happy 🙂 (probably because his auntie is visiting)

Yes I know, more baby photos – sorry!

Nicole is already an experienced user of smartphones and tablets. It’s interesting to see how the world has changed – I didn’t even have a normal mobile phone until I was 15 … (Btw, note that she is sitting in Matthew’s lap – before she wouldn’t even go near him. She even hugged him goodbye when we left!)

No wonder Nicole knows her phones and tablets, this is how early they start nowadays. (My dad is showing Antonio the wonders of technology.)

I was really looking forward to some skiing, but the weather was pretty much the same as in Edinburgh – rain, rain and more rain. However, on our last morning we woke up to this view.

Strange how sleeping a lot makes you want to sleep even more. I guess it’s time for real life now and no more going to bed at 2 am and sleeping till noon…Good night!

I har a magical feeling when i went back to work Tue 7th, after many days of holidaying. They say that the feeling comes when u have time to sleep enough, relax enough and do enough of satisfying things during ur holiday. I believe them, even if I thought that returning from a holiday is always pain in the… 2 things that especially caught my attention in this post was 1) your second-Christmas dinner looks amazing. Its such a blessing to have a big family. You get the chance to hang out with a big bunch of nice people anytime. 2) nut roast. One of my favorite dishes. Made me hungry. I had forgotten abt that food, gotta make one in the weekend. Ok, gotta go to work…

I felt like I slept more during the holidays than during the whole year altogether! It was great feeling rested for once. You’re right, it’s a blessing to have a big family – and that wasn’t even the whole family 🙂 Nut roast is amazing, if you have a good recipe please share it with me!
